Richard Mupumha Junior was born in October 1988 in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe. The 7th child in a family of eight, named from his uncle who is the NAMA Award winner and established artist Richard Mupumha.
Richard’s older brothers, Onias and Itayi are established sculptors in Zimbabwe hence it is equally true to conclude that art runs in the Mupumha family bloodline. At the weekends during his schooldays, Richard would earn a little pocket money by helping them work on their sculptures – a typical informal apprenticeship whereby he would assist in the sanding and polishing of the finishing stages of sculptures.
Immediately after finishing secondary school, Richard wanted to improve and perfect his talent in stone curving and develop it to a career professionally, so he joined Onias as his assistant. Now he is sculpting full-time and it has been a few years but is now ranked among the best stone sculptures in the country and has many customers from all round the world.
