CHANGO CHITOKO is a mother of three children, two in high school and her first-born waiting to go into College. Chango who grew up in rural Murehwa took inspiration from friends and her grand father who mentored her on wood carving cooking sticks and mortar and pestles.
Years after relocating into Chitungwiza Arts Centre, Chango received further tutelage from seasoned Visual artist Shepherd Phiri and now concentrates on traditional themes that she is mostly used to and also reflecting her background.
In answer to the question, The Covid19 Lockdown brought limits to everyone. How did you go through these difficult times, she said: It was a hard time for me. l had to spend most of my time curving at home. l had few materials to work on.
Chango was quick to point out that she needs financial support to acquire electric machines such as grinders, cutters, chisels, and internet to connect locally and globally online on face book and websites.
In her closing remarks Ms. Chango Chitoko encouraged parents, teachers and artists to teach children African and Shona traditional themes so that they won’t be forgotten or lost into oblivion.
