Description
This is a one of a kind hand carved stone sculpture made by one of the first generation master stone sculptors of Zimbabwe; the late Sylvester Mubayi. He was amongst the first generation of Zimbabwean sculptors to achieve international exposure and acclaim. His career as a sculptor begun in 1967 when he joined the Tengenenge Sculptor Community under Tom Blomefield.
Born in 1942, Sylvester Mubayi was a revered old man. His life and work was guided by Shona culture and beliefs. As an elder he taught and advised the young in the community through metaphor and storytelling – and his sculptures will continue to tell a story well after he has passed on.
