An essential aspect of our African culture is respect. Respect is vital in maintaining social fabrics. This sculpture depicts two siblings kneeling before a visitor to serve them a cool and refreshing traditional drink.
This is an original one of a kind, hand carved stone sculpture made by one of the first generation master stone sculptors of Zimbabwe, Sylvester Mubayi. He is amongst the first generation of Zimbabwean sculptors to achieve international exposure and acclaim. His career as a sculptor begun in 1967 when he joined the Tengenenge Sculptor Community under Tom Blomefield.
Born in 1942, Sylvester Mubayi is a revered old man. His life and work is guided by Shona culture and beliefs. As an elder he teaches and advises the young in the community through metaphor and storytelling – and his sculptures always tell a story as well.
