Great Zimbabwe is the massive medieval stone city built by the ancestors of the Shona people between 1100 and 1450 CE, featuring three main architectural groups known as the Hill Complex, the Great Enclosure, and the Valley Complex. It was here where the first notable stone sculptures were discovered. Zimbabwe derives its name from the stone city.
The Great Zimbabwe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest ancient stone structure in sub-Saharan Africa. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, these remarkable ruins were once the heart of a thriving trading empire connected to Persia, India, China, and South Africa’s Mapumgubwe.
