This is an original one of a kind, hand carved stone sculpture made by one of the first generation master stone sculptors of Zimbabwe, the late Sylvester Mubayi. He was amongst the first generation of Zimbabwean sculptors to achieve international exposure and acclaim. His career as a sculptor begun in 1967 when he joined the Tengenenge Sculptor Community under Tom Blomefield.
Born in 1942, Sylvester Mubayi was a revered old man. His life and work is guided by Shona culture and beliefs. As an elder he teaches and advises the young in the community through metaphor and storytelling – and his sculptures continue to tell his story after he is gone.
