Description

The Strychnos spinosa tree, also known as the Spiny or Green Monkey Orange, yields these unique gourds. A favored food source for humns, monkeys and other wildlife, harvesting these fruits provides crucial income for local villagers and discourages deforestation for firewood.

Literature survey revealed that S. spinosa is used in the treatment of microbial infections, malaria, trypanosomiasis, intestinal worms, tuberculosis, infertility, gastrointestinal disorders, snake bite, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus among other ailments.

These gourds are dried and transformed into decorative art, featuring intricate hand-carvings, hand-painted designs, or a combination of both.
